- Living room — front legs on, back legs off: The most common and practical living room configuration has the front legs of all sofas and chairs on the rug, with the back legs on the floor. For this approach, choose a rug approximately 60cm wider and longer than the seating group it serves.
- Living room — fully under the furniture: All furniture legs on the rug. This requires a significantly larger rug — typically 240x340cm or larger for a standard living room. Creates a more room-within-a-room effect. Works best in large open-plan spaces where the rug needs to define a zone clearly.
- Dining room: The rug should extend at least 60cm beyond the table on all sides — enough that chairs remain on the rug when pulled out. A 180cm round table needs a minimum 300cm round rug, or a 250x350cm rectangular rug.
- Bedroom: Place the rug under the bottom two-thirds of the bed, with the sides extending beyond the bed by 60–90cm on each side. This means your feet hit the rug when getting out of bed on either side — the primary functional requirement of a bedroom rug.
- Hallway: A runner should be approximately half the hallway width, centred, and as long as the hallway allows. Leave 15–20cm of bare floor visible on each side of the runner.

Can jute rugs be used in bathrooms?
No — jute absorbs moisture heavily and is not suitable for bathrooms or any area with regular water exposure. Cotton flatweave rugs are the appropriate choice for bathroom applications.

Natural fiber rugs can generally be used with underfloor heating systems — check that the system operates below 27°C at the floor surface. High temperatures accelerate fiber drying and can cause brittleness over time.
