Teak Console Tables from Bali: The Statement Piece Your Entryway Needs

A console table is one of the most architecturally important pieces of furniture in a home — and one of the most neglected. It occupies the entry, the hallway behind the sofa, or the dining room wall. It's one of the first things people see when they walk in. And in most homes, it's either absent entirely or occupied by a generic piece that does nothing for the space. BaliSouk's console collection addresses this gap directly — handcrafted teak and rattan consoles in a range of widths and depths, designed to command a wall with the presence and material warmth that only solid natural materials can provide.

Every console in this collection is handcrafted in Bali from solid teak, reclaimed wood, or natural rattan by artisans with specific knowledge of thin-profile furniture construction — the craft challenge of building something visually slender that is also structurally rigid. Console tables experience significant cantilever stress from objects placed at the ends of the top surface, and from people occasionally leaning against them in an entryway. Our consoles are built to handle this without flexing, racking, or loosening at the joints over years of use.

The collection includes narrow entryway consoles for tight spaces (30–35cm deep), standard depth consoles for hallways and dining rooms (40–45cm), and wider statement consoles with lower shelving for living rooms and studies. Styles range from minimal slatted designs to carved panel fronts to open rattan-framed structures that are visually light while being structurally solid.

How to Choose the Right Console Table

• Depth for the location: Entryway consoles need to be narrow enough to not impede circulation — 30–38cm depth is appropriate for most hallways. For consoles behind a sofa or against a dining room wall, 40–45cm allows more styling space on the surface without feeling cramped.
• Width relative to the wall: The console should occupy 50–70% of the wall width it sits against. Too narrow and it looks arbitrary. Too wide and it crowds the wall and competes with surrounding elements.
• Height: Standard console height is 80–90cm — slightly below hip height for most adults. This is the appropriate height for an entryway console where you place things while removing shoes or coats. For a console behind a sofa, match the console height approximately to the sofa back height for a coherent visual line.
• With or without lower shelf: A console with a lower shelf provides additional storage and styling space — baskets, books, a plant. A console without a lower shelf reads as more minimal and is easier to keep clean. Choose based on your storage needs and cleaning preferences.
• Open vs. closed front: Open-leg consoles create visual lightness — they're better for small spaces and narrow hallways where a heavy base would feel oppressive. Panel-front consoles have more visual weight and architectural presence — better for larger rooms where you want the piece to read as a statement.

Styling a Console Table: The Art of the Entryway Moment

The console table surface is one of the most visible and highest-impact styling surfaces in any home. A well-composed console communicates to visitors immediately that the space is considered. An unstylied or poorly styled console communicates the opposite.

The classic entryway console composition: A mirror centred above — either the same width as the console or slightly narrower. Two tall objects flanking it — vases, sculptural pieces, or lamps at matching heights. One lower object in the centre — a tray, a bowl, a small sculpture. Nothing else. This composition works in virtually every space because it creates vertical interest, symmetry, and a clear focal point.

Asymmetric styling: One tall object to one side, a cluster of medium-height objects on the other, a trailing plant or low object in the opposite corner. More dynamic, slightly less formal — better for interiors that are more eclectic in character.

The console behind the sofa: Keep the surface relatively simple — a long tray, a couple of objects, and a pair of small lamps or one large statement lamp. The console behind the sofa should be visible from across the room and should read as a defined moment rather than a cluttered shelf.

Materials: Solid Teak and Natural Rattan

Console tables experience the full range of household use — things placed on them heavily, leaned against, and occasionally bumped in narrow hallways. Solid teak handles all of this without flex or deterioration. The natural oil content provides some resistance to moisture and humidity variation — relevant for entryway consoles in climates with significant seasonal humidity changes. Joints are mortise-and-tenon construction, which distributes stress across a wide gluing and fitting surface rather than concentrating it at fastener points.

Rattan-incorporated consoles bring visual lightness — the open weave reads as transparent from a distance, reducing the visual mass of the piece in tight spaces. The rattan is finished with natural lacquer for protection and applied over teak or bamboo structural frames that carry the actual load.

Care and Maintenance

• Surface cleaning: Wipe with a damp cloth for daily cleaning. Mild soap solution for marks. Dry immediately — don't let water sit on the surface or pool in joints.
• Annual oiling: Apply teak oil once or twice a year to maintain the warm tone. Entry consoles may benefit from more frequent oiling if they're near an exterior door with significant humidity variation.
• Rattan components: Dust with a soft brush, clean with a barely damp cloth. Keep out of sustained direct sunlight.
• Felt pads: Use felt pads under all leg bases on hard floors — solid teak consoles are heavy and will mark unprotected floors.

What Buyers Are Looking For

Buyers searching for a teak console table or a hallway console table are typically looking for a piece that elevates the entry of their home — that makes the first impression count. BaliSouk's consoles deliver this: the visual weight of solid teak, the craft presence of Balinese construction, and proportions that work in real hallways and living rooms rather than only in showroom settings.
