Three Mechanisms That End an Outdoor Piece Early

Outdoor failure is rarely dramatic. It is the accumulated result of water sitting where it should have drained, timber moving further than a joint allowed, and a fixing corroding from the inside. Manufacturing against those three mechanisms is most of the work.

Water that cannot leave

The single most common design fault in outdoor furniture is a detail that traps water. A blind mortise that fills and never dries, a recessed screw head that becomes a small reservoir, a slat spacing tight enough to hold a meniscus. Timber that stays wet stays wet from the inside, and no surface treatment reaches it. We detail joints so that water has somewhere to go: through-joints where the geometry allows, drainage relief at the bottom of blind sockets, slat gaps wide enough to shed rather than hold, and feet that lift the frame off standing water on a terrace.

Movement that the joint did not anticipate

Outdoor timber cycles between wet and dry constantly, and it moves further and more often than interior timber ever does. A tabletop fixed rigidly across its width will split — not might, will. Outdoor tops are fixed through elongated holes that let the top slide against its base, wide surfaces are made from narrower boards so movement is distributed across several joints rather than concentrated in one, and grain direction is planned so that seasonal movement happens where the design can absorb it.

Fixings that corrode from within

Plated and zinc-coated fasteners fail outdoors, and they fail invisibly: the head looks fine while the shank corrodes inside the timber. In coastal air this happens quickly. Stainless is the baseline for anything exposed, with a higher-molybdenum grade where salt is constant. Mixing metals matters too — a stainless screw through an untreated mild steel bracket creates a galvanic couple that eats the weaker metal.

Grain orientation, decided before anything is cut

Where a component sits in the log determines how it behaves outdoors. Sapwood has none of the oils and silica that give teak its resistance and has no place in an exterior piece at all. A leg cut so that grain runs short across its length will break under a load a correctly cut leg carries indefinitely. This is a selection decision made at the bench and it cannot be recovered later by any finish.

Three Outdoor Construction Systems and What Each Is Made Of

Outdoor furniture is built from a small number of material systems, and a manufacturer is only genuinely good at some of them. Knowing which is which prevents specifying a piece the maker cannot build well.

Solid hardwood, mechanically jointed

Teak and comparable dense timbers, joined with mortise and tenon and stainless fixings. Heavy, which is an advantage in wind and a disadvantage in labour. Repairable indefinitely: a damaged slat is replaced, a scarred surface is sanded back. It silvers and needs nothing. This is the system with the longest service life and the highest raw material cost, and it is what we build most of.

Woven synthetic fibre over coated metal

UV-stabilised polyethylene fibre hand-woven over powder-coated aluminium or treated steel. Light, colour-fast, unaffected by rain, and immune to the corrosion that ends steel-framed furniture in coastal air. The critical manufacturing variables are invisible: frame pre-treatment before coating, weld preparation, and whether the inside of a hollow frame section is sealed or left open to fill with water. We build in this system and treat the concealed frame interior as part of the specification rather than as somewhere nobody looks.

Composite and recycled-plastic lumber

Extruded boards of wood flour and polymer, or solid recycled polymer profiles, fabricated rather than jointed. Genuinely maintenance-free, colour-fast, and completely unaffected by water. Heavier than it looks, expands with heat more than timber does, and cannot be repaired — a damaged board is replaced, not restored. It is a legitimate and often sensible material.

We do not manufacture in composite or recycled-plastic lumber. It requires extrusion and fabrication rather than joinery and there is no point pretending otherwise. Buyers whose priority is zero maintenance above all should look at a composite specialist, and we will say so rather than argue them toward timber.

What a Manufacturer Needs to Build Outdoor Furniture Properly

Outdoor pieces are specified badly more often than any other category, usually because the brief describes appearance and leaves the physics implicit.

Describe the exposure, not the location

Covered terrace, uncovered deck, poolside and beachfront are four different construction briefs. Say which, per piece, on the plan. Poolside adds chlorine to everything; beachfront adds salt, which changes the fixing specification rather than just the finish.

State the wind condition honestly

Exposed rooftops, coastal terraces and open decks need mass, a wide footprint and a low centre of gravity, and those are design constraints rather than options. A light chair on an exposed rooftop is a projectile. If the site is windy, say so at the drawing stage — it is not a problem that can be solved by adding weight afterwards.

Say whether pieces are moved daily

Furniture repositioned by staff every day needs lift points, a weight one person can manage, and glides that survive being dragged across stone. Furniture that stays put can be heavier and more sculptural. These pull in opposite directions and the manufacturer needs to know which matters.

Decide cushions separately, with a replacement cycle

Cushions are consumables outdoors regardless of textile grade. Specify outdoor-grade fabric, quick-dry foam and drainage, and budget covers on a replacement cycle rather than expecting them to last the frame.

Ask what can be replaced

Slats, woven panels, feet, glides and fixings should all be individually replaceable and individually orderable. This is a design decision made at the bench, and it is the difference between a ten-year asset and a three-year consumable.

Give the destination climate for timber drying

Outdoor pieces are more forgiving than interior furniture here, but stock dried for the tropics still behaves differently in a cold-climate garden room, and stock shipped wet arrives mouldy whatever its grade.

What makes outdoor furniture genuinely weatherproof?

Construction rather than coating. Drainage designed into the joints, movement allowed for in the fixings, corrosion-resistant fasteners throughout, and a material that tolerates being wet. A weatherproof claim attached to a piece with water-trapping details is a claim about the finish only.

Do you manufacture in composite or recycled-plastic lumber?

No. We work in solid hardwood and in hand-woven synthetic fibre over coated metal frames. Composite requires extrusion and fabrication rather than joinery, and buyers whose priority is zero maintenance may be better served by a composite specialist.

What do you build for very windy sites?

Heavier sections, wider footprints and a lower centre of gravity, specified at drawing stage. Weight is the honest answer for wind, and it trades against how easily staff can move the piece — which is why we ask about both before designing.

Which stainless grade do you use near the sea?

A higher corrosion-resistant grade for constant salt exposure, standard stainless elsewhere. What matters as much is avoiding mixed metals in one assembly, which creates galvanic corrosion regardless of the grade chosen.

Can outdoor pieces be repaired rather than replaced?

Where they are designed for it, yes. Slats, woven panels and fittings on our commercial outdoor pieces are individually replaceable, and solid timber surfaces can be sanded and refinished repeatedly.

Do you hold weather-testing certification?

No, and we will not imply it. We build to the construction principles described here and inspect against an approved reference. Where a project requires certified testing to a named standard, it must be arranged independently.

Can you make outdoor furniture to our drawings?

Yes. We review the drawing for buildability in the intended material, flag any detail that will trap water or restrain movement, then prototype before production.

The Details We Argue About Before Production

The most useful thing an outdoor manufacturer can do for a client is object to a drawing early. Designers who work primarily indoors routinely draw details that are elegant and unbuildable outdoors, and every one of them is cheap to change on paper and expensive to change on a terrace.

We raise water-trapping details as a matter of course: a recessed fixing that will pool, a blind socket with no drainage relief, a horizontal surface with no fall, a slat spacing that holds rather than sheds. We raise restrained movement where a wide top has been drawn fixed rigidly to its frame. We raise mixed metals in a single assembly. And we raise the cases where a form simply cannot be built in solid timber at the section drawn without becoming fragile.

Each objection comes with a proposed alternative that keeps the design intent, because a manufacturer who only says no is not much use. What we will not do is build a detail we expect to fail and let the client discover it in year three with our name on the piece.

Beyond the drawing, the mechanisms are ordinary and matter more than any of it. Timber is selected for grain orientation and freedom from sapwood before machining. Concealed frame interiors are treated, because that is where rot and corrosion actually start and where nobody inspects. Moisture content is checked before packing. Settling the Physics Before the Drawing Is Signed

Outdoor manufacturing succeeds or fails at the drawing review. Exposure per piece, wind condition, whether staff move it daily, and which components must be replaceable — settle those four and the construction decisions follow logically. Leave them implicit and the piece gets built to look right rather than to last.
