The Raw Material Before It Reaches a Workshop
Rattan is not a tree. It is a climbing palm that grows through forest canopy, harvested as long flexible stems and processed before it can be used. The stages between forest and workshop determine what a manufacturer has to work with.
Harvested canes are cleaned of their thorny outer sheath, then cured — traditionally by boiling in oil, which drives out moisture and sugars, kills insect larvae and hardens the stem. Poorly cured cane is the origin of the borer holes that appear in cheap rattan furniture six months after purchase. Cured canes are graded by diameter and straightness, then either kept whole as structural pole or split into peel and core.

We work with cured, graded cane of consistent diameter, because a frame assembled from mixed-diameter poles will never sit true and a weave using inconsistent peel will never look even. Building the Frame
Every woven chair is two objects: a structure that carries load and a surface that carries appearance. The structure comes first.
Solid rattan pole is steamed until pliable, bent around a form, and held until it cools and sets. The skill lies in reading how far a given cane will bend before it kinks, and in judging when it has set enough to release. A kinked pole is scrap; an under-set curve relaxes and the chair loses its line within a year.
Joints are then cut, fitted and bound. Traditional binding uses rattan peel wrapped tightly over the joint, which is both structural and decorative; contemporary construction often adds concealed mechanical fixing at high-load points. Load paths matter: a lounge chair carries weight differently from a bar stool, and a frame designed for one will fail in the role of the other.

Weaving: Techniques and What They Are For
Weave is not decoration applied to a frame. Different weaves have different structural and tactile properties, and specifying the wrong one produces a piece that is uncomfortable, fragile or both.
- Close weave in peel gives a dense, smooth surface suitable for seats and backs in direct body contact. Slow to produce, hard-wearing.
- Open lattice and cane webbing gives transparency and airflow, ideal in chair backs and cabinet doors. It carries less load and needs a supporting frame around it.
- Core weave uses the inner pith in thicker strands for a chunkier, more textural surface, often used on lounge and outdoor forms.
- Herringbone, twill and basket variations are pattern choices that also change surface tension and how the piece ages.
Weaving is genuinely hand work. An experienced weaver produces a chair back in hours, not minutes, and speed cannot be increased without visible loss of tension consistency. This is the fundamental constraint on rattan production volume and the reason lead times for woven goods behave differently from those for solid timber.

Natural Fibre and Synthetic Rattan Production
We manufacture in both natural and synthetic fibre, and the production processes are related but distinct.
Natural rattan production is as described above: cured cane, steam-bent frame, hand weave, penetrating finish. It belongs indoors or under cover. Left in rain and direct sun it will fade, dry out and eventually fail, and no finish prevents that indefinitely.
Synthetic rattan production begins with a different frame — usually powder-coated aluminium or treated steel — over which an extruded polyethylene fibre is woven by hand using the same techniques. The weaving skill is identical; the material behaves differently. UV-stabilised synthetic fibre holds colour and structural integrity through years of direct exposure, which makes it the correct specification for uncovered pool decks, beach clubs and exposed terraces.
Neither material is superior in the abstract. Specifying natural rattan for full exposure because it is more authentic is the most expensive mistake in this category, and we will argue against it — and where a project is genuinely exterior, our contract-grade outdoor range is specified by exposure rather than by appearance. Bespoke Woven Work and Prototyping
Custom rattan differs from custom timber in one important respect: you cannot fully specify a weave in a drawing. Density, tension and pattern have to be seen and touched.
Our bespoke process therefore front-loads physical sampling. We review the drawing for structural feasibility — whether the frame geometry can be bent in cane at all, whether the load paths resolve, whether the proportions suit the material. We then produce weave samples on a section of frame so the specifier can approve the actual surface, not a description of it. Only after that do we prototype the complete piece.
Designers coming from upholstered or moulded furniture often draw shapes that cannot be steam-bent, or specify tight radii that cane will not take. We identify these early and propose a form that keeps the design intent while being buildable. Frequently Asked Questions
Do you manufacture rattan furniture to our own designs?
Yes. Send drawings and reference images. We assess structural feasibility in cane, produce weave samples for approval, prototype the piece and then move to production.
Do you produce synthetic rattan as well as natural?
Yes. Synthetic polyethylene fibre over powder-coated aluminium or treated steel frames, hand-woven using the same techniques. It is our standard recommendation for fully exposed outdoor applications.
How is rattan protected against insects?
Through proper curing of the cane before manufacture, which removes the sugars that attract borers. Curing is the defence; surface treatment applied to badly cured cane will not save it.
Can woven pieces be repaired?
Yes. Individual damaged sections can be rewoven by a skilled weaver, which is one of the practical advantages of hand-woven construction over moulded alternatives. We can supply matching cane for local repair where a client has a maintenance team.
How much variation should we expect across identical pieces?
Small variation in weave texture and cane colour is inherent and is agreed as a tolerance band at sample approval. Frame geometry does not vary, because frames are jigged.
What quantities can you produce?
Substantial runs are routine, but hand weaving sets a real ceiling on how fast a given quantity can be produced. We will tell you what is achievable in your timeframe rather than accept an order we cannot deliver as specified. Buyers ordering catalogue models in quantity for resale are quoted through our wholesale rattan programme rather than as a production commission.
Can you combine rattan with solid timber?
Frequently, and it is often the best answer structurally — a timber frame carrying load with woven panels providing surface and texture. Several of our most-ordered models are built this way, drawing on the same workshops that handle our solid teak manufacturing.
Consistency Across a Production Run
Hand weaving varies. The question for any project buyer is whether that variation stays inside an acceptable band.
We control it three ways. Frames are jigged, so geometry is identical piece to piece regardless of who assembles them. Weavers work to an approved reference sample kept physically in the workshop, not to a photograph. And a single run is, wherever possible, completed by the same small group of weavers, because tension is personal — two equally skilled weavers produce subtly different surfaces, and mixing them across one dining set is visible when the chairs sit together.
We also set the tolerance explicitly with the client at sample approval: acceptable colour range, acceptable weave variation, acceptable dimensional variance. A project manager who knows the band in advance can brief their client accurately. One who does not will be surprised on installation day.

Finishing and Protection
Natural rattan is finished to seal the fibre without filling the weave. Penetrating finishes are used in preference to heavy film coatings, which crack where the weave flexes and are effectively impossible to repair once they do. Colour is achieved by staining the cane before or during finishing rather than by painting over the surface, so that wear reveals more cane rather than a different colour beneath.
Synthetic fibre needs no finish; the colour is in the material. Its frames, however, need proper coating — a powder-coated aluminium frame will outlive a painted steel one by a decade in coastal air, and the difference is invisible until the corrosion appears.
