From Log to Piece: The Production Sequence

Teak manufacture follows a sequence in which each stage constrains the next.

Timber selection. Boards are chosen for grade, grain direction and freedom from sapwood in structural positions. A leg cut across the grain will fail regardless of how well it is joined. How grade is established and documented before timber reaches the workshop is covered on our teak supply page.

Drying. Timber is dried to a moisture content appropriate to the destination climate before machining, not after. Working wet timber and drying the finished piece is the origin of most split tabletops in the export trade.

Milling and machining. Components are dimensioned. Machinery is used here because accuracy matters more than romance — a hand-planed tenon is not better than a machined one, merely slower.

Joinery. Mortise and tenon, dovetail, and floating panel construction where movement must be accommodated. This is where hand skill returns and where the difference between workshops becomes structural rather than cosmetic.

Assembly and fitting. Dry-fitted, adjusted, then glued and pinned. A joint that needs force to close will open later.

Sanding and finishing. Progressive grits, then oil, wax or lacquer according to specification. Finish is where a competent piece becomes a good one and where corners are most easily cut invisibly.

Designing for Movement

Solid timber moves. It expands across the grain as humidity rises and contracts as it falls, and it does this for the whole life of the piece. A manufacturer who ignores this produces furniture that looks perfect on delivery and splits in its second year.

Designing for movement is a set of specific decisions: breadboard ends on wide tops, floating panels in frames rather than glued fields, elongated fixing holes that let a top slide against its base, and grain orientation planned so that movement occurs where it can be absorbed. None of these are visible in a photograph. All of them determine whether the piece survives a heated apartment in Chicago or an air-conditioned suite in Dubai.

This is the single most important reason to specify a manufacturer rather than a supplier of finished stock: the decision that keeps a table intact is made before the timber is cut, by someone who knows where the table is going.

Knock-Down Engineering for Export

Freight is charged by volume, and assembled furniture ships air. A significant part of our engineering effort goes into designing pieces that dismantle for transport and reassemble on site without loss of rigidity.

Knock-down construction is not simply bolting a leg on. It requires joints engineered to be tightened repeatedly, hardware that will not work loose under commercial use, and assembly that a site crew can complete correctly without specialist tools. Done badly it produces wobbly furniture; done well it halves shipping volume with no perceptible difference in the finished piece.

Three of our pieces show the approach. The Kinito Dining Table with slats ships flat and assembles into a rigid dining table. The Leo Round Table uses a knock-down base beneath a solid round top, which is the configuration that ships worst if engineered badly and best if engineered well. Where Indonesian Teak Furniture Is Made

Indonesia has two furniture traditions that outsiders often collapse into one. Jepara, on the north coast of Java, is the historic centre of Indonesian woodworking — a town where carving skills have passed through families for generations and where the majority of the country's export furniture volume originates. Bali developed differently: smaller workshops, a stronger design culture shaped by decades of contact with international architects and hoteliers, and a tradition oriented toward sculptural form rather than reproduction carving.

Both produce excellent work. They produce different work. Javanese workshops excel at volume, at classical carving and at established forms. Balinese workshops tend to be better at interpreting a contemporary drawing, at sculptural and live-edge work, and at the kind of iterative prototyping that a designer wants when a piece is still being resolved.

We manufacture in Bali because our work is design-led and specification-driven rather than catalogue-reproduction. It is the right choice for bespoke and hospitality work; it would be the wrong choice for a buyer whose only requirement is the lowest possible unit cost on a standard carved model.

Finishes and What They Do

Finish selection is a functional decision disguised as an aesthetic one. Natural oil penetrates the timber, enhances grain and can be repaired locally by re-oiling a damaged area — which makes it the sensible choice for hospitality furniture that will be scratched. Wax gives a softer surface sheen but offers little protection against moisture and is poorly suited to dining surfaces. Lacquer forms a hard film that resists staining well but, once damaged, must be stripped and refinished across the whole surface rather than spot-repaired. Untreated teak, left alone outdoors, silvers to a stable grey and needs nothing at all.

We recommend against finish choices that will create maintenance problems in the intended environment, even when the client has specified them, and we explain why rather than simply refusing.

Bespoke Manufacturing and Prototyping

Most of our project work involves pieces that do not exist until a client draws them. The process runs in a fixed sequence.

We begin with a review of the drawing for buildability — whether the proportions work in solid timber, whether the joints resolve, whether the material behaves as the designer expects. Designers who work primarily in metal or in engineered board frequently draw details that are elegant and impossible in solid teak, and it is our job to say so early and to propose an alternative that preserves the intent.

We then quote against the resolved drawing, produce a prototype, and revise it. Prototyping is chargeable and, on a substantial order, normally credited. The approved prototype becomes the physical reference standard against which the production run is inspected — a considerably more reliable instrument than a written specification, because it settles arguments about finish and proportion that words cannot.

What Drives the Cost of a Made-to-Order Teak Piece

Buyers comparing Indonesian teak prices are usually comparing pieces that differ in ways the quotation does not show. Five variables account for most of the spread.

Section thickness. Timber is sold by volume, so a tabletop at forty millimetres costs substantially more in material than the same top at twenty-five. It also behaves differently, and looks it.

Board width and continuity. A top made from three wide boards costs more than the same top made from eight narrow ones, because wide clear stock is scarcer. Finger-jointed and laminated components are cheaper again and are legitimate in some applications, but they are a different product.

Joinery complexity. A mortise-and-tenon frame takes hours that a dowelled or screwed frame does not. The difference is invisible on delivery and decisive at year five.

Finish specification. Progressive hand sanding to a fine grit followed by multiple oil coats is a different labour cost from a single sprayed coat over machine sanding.

Quantity of the same model. This is the largest single lever available to a buyer. Jigging and setup are fixed costs amortised across the run, so twenty of one table is far cheaper per unit than four each of five tables. Where a budget is tight, consolidating models is almost always more effective than reducing specification.

Do you manufacture from client drawings?

Yes. Send drawings with dimensions, joint intentions and finish references. We review buildability, raise any issues, then quote and prototype before series production.

Are you a manufacturer or a trading company?

A manufacturer. Our artisans produce to our specifications in our workshops. That is why we can prototype, modify and hold a specification across repeat orders.

What is your minimum order for custom production?

It depends on the piece. A modification to an existing model can be produced in small quantities. A wholly new design carries prototyping and jigging costs that only make sense above a certain volume, and we will tell you where that threshold sits for your specific piece.

Can you match furniture we already own?

Usually. Send photographs, dimensions and, where possible, a physical sample or a close-up of the joint detail and finish. Matching a finish across a different timber batch is the hardest part and is never exact.

Do you also work in other Indonesian timbers?

Yes. Suar, mahogany and reclaimed timbers each suit different applications, and for many indoor pieces they are the better commercial answer than teak. We will recommend the material that fits the use rather than defaulting to the most expensive one.

How do you handle production for multiple destinations?

Drying specification is set per destination climate. A single order split between a tropical property and a temperate one may be produced as two batches with different moisture targets, which is more work but avoids failures in the temperate half.

What lead time should I plan for?

Sampling and prototyping typically precede a production window that varies with quantity, complexity and finish. We give a realistic date at order confirmation and report slippage early. Hand production cannot be compressed indefinitely without visible consequences, and we will not promise that it can.

Capacity, Repetition and Quality at Volume

The question every project buyer eventually asks is whether hand manufacture can hold quality across a hundred identical pieces. The honest answer is that it can, under two conditions: the model must be jigged, and the inspection must be against a reference rather than against opinion.

Jigging means building fixtures that hold components in the same relationship every time, so that the hundredth chair has the same seat height and back angle as the first. Reference inspection means comparing output against the approved prototype rather than against a foreman's judgement on the day.

Where a run genuinely exceeds what hand manufacture can hold to specification within the timeline, we say so before accepting the order. A manufacturer who accepts every quantity at every deadline is planning to disappoint someone.
