Almost every avoidable complaint in this category traces back to a customer who was not told what the material does. Retailers who explain it at the point of sale convert better and receive fewer returns than those who let a photograph do the work.
Untreated Grade A teak weathers to a soft silver-grey within roughly a year of outdoor exposure, faster in strong sun. The colour change is entirely superficial: the natural oils and silica that make teak resistant to water, rot and insects remain in the timber. A customer who expects the golden showroom tone to persist will report the silvering as a defect. A customer who was told it would happen frequently prefers the result.
Fine surface cracks appear in thick teak sections as they respond to sun and rain cycles. They are cosmetic and do not propagate into structural failure in properly dried, correctly jointed timber. Again, the difference between a complaint and a satisfied customer is whether anyone mentioned it.
Oiling maintains the golden tone and must then be repeated, typically annually. Half-maintained teak looks worse than either extreme. Retailers should sell oil as an aesthetic choice with an ongoing obligation, not as protection the furniture requires.
Because teak lasts, there is an active secondary market in used outdoor teak, and clearance stock circulates at the end of each season. Retailers competing on price alone are competing against fifteen-year-old furniture that still works. The structural decision in an outdoor teak assortment is whether you sell matched sets or open stock. It affects margin, warehousing and how you photograph the range.
A table with its chairs, priced and sold as one unit. Sets carry a higher ticket, photograph as a finished scene, and simplify the customer's decision. They also mean a single damaged chair takes a whole set out of sellable stock, and they lock your warehouse into a fixed configuration. Sets suit retailers with showroom space and a customer who wants the decision made for them.
Tables, chairs and benches sold individually and combined by the customer. Lower average ticket but far more flexible: damaged units are replaced individually, seat counts can be adjusted to a customer's terrace, and slow-moving components can be discounted without breaking a set. Open stock suits online sellers and retailers with limited display space.
Two or three hero sets for photography and showroom, with the same models also available as open stock. It gives the visual benefit of sets and the operational flexibility of components. It requires the supplier to price both ways, which is worth establishing at the first order rather than discovering later.
Weight is the other variable that separates outdoor teak from most wholesale categories: dense timber reaches a container's payload ceiling well before it fills the space, which is why pairing it with bulky woven or cushioned goods produces a materially better load. Outdoor furniture is bought against a selling window, and the window is unforgiving. These are the decisions that determine whether a container arrives useful or arrives late.
In temperate markets, outdoor sells in a concentrated period and dies abruptly. Stock arriving two weeks after that period opens loses a disproportionate share of the season. Production, inspection, packing, ocean freight and clearance run in sequence; build the schedule from the selling week, not the order date.
Grade A heartwood is what performs outdoors untreated. Grade B and sapwood-heavy stock can be finished to look identical on delivery and will not last. Write the grade on the purchase order rather than relying on a catalogue adjective, and require photographs of raw end grain rather than finished surfaces.
Cushions are consumables with a different life expectancy from the frames they sit on. Buy them as a replaceable line with its own reorder plan, in outdoor-grade textile, rather than treating them as part of the furniture.
A single replacement chair sourced next spring costs unit price plus freight against a possibly changed model. A small percentage of spares in the original container costs almost nothing.
Knock-down construction substantially reduces packed volume and handling damage. Ask for packed cubic metres per line so a container can be modelled before it is committed.

Grade is the one thing in this category a wholesale buyer cannot verify from photographs and cannot easily verify on arrival either, because finish conceals species and grade while end grain does not. Timber is selected before machining for grade, grain direction and the absence of sapwood in structural positions. A leg cut across the grain fails whatever the grade, and a sapwood component in an outdoor frame fails regardless of how well the rest was chosen. This is a selection decision made at the bench, not a certificate applied afterwards.
Moisture content is dried to a target set by your destination rather than to one standard, and stated at packing. Outdoor furniture is more forgiving of this than interior furniture, but stock shipped wet still arrives mouldy and stock dried for the tropics still moves in a cold-climate garden room.
Before loading we photograph the actual goods, including raw end grain on request, so a grade claim can be checked against an image of the timber rather than of the finish. What we will not do is claim certification we do not hold or quote weathering performance figures we cannot support. The material's behaviour is well documented; our part is to be accurate about grade, drying and construction and let the timber do the rest.
